Introduction to VTP

In introduction to VTP you should know the basics of VTP and what is the purpose and benefit of VTP. The following information will help to understand the next lesson which is "VTP commands".

VTP is very important protocol for a network manager for several reasons. Imagine that network manager had to separate one LAN into two different LAN, so he must create two VLAN into the network switches. Then he should access to every switch to configure the VLAN database.
But with VTP he only need to make the configuration on one switch (server switch) and this switch will distribute the VLAN database to all switch in the network (VLAN is distributed through all switches in the domain). So that mean VTP is :
• Easy to use.
• Save time.
• More flexibility.

VTP only learns about the normal-range of VLANs (VLAN IDs 1 to 1005). Extended-range of VLANs (IDs greater than 1005) are not supported by VTP.

Now try to Answer these question to test your knowledge :

 What are features of VTP?
What is purpose of VTP?
